Blog 39: The Lamantable Journey of…

Vega utilizes the narrative structure of enveloping several narrations within the story. He utilizes the matrix narration where the first degree narration is the journey of Omaha and the second is when Vega interjects within the text to adress to the readers that the novel is indeed fiction. Each narration begins as a whole and then develops into another story. The dialogue between Vega and Maruquita is written in the third-person which throws off the narrative style because she calls Vega to consider what he’s writing about Omaha’s penile extension. The novel develops into several narration where the reader switches back and forth into different stories. We get the story of Omaha’s journey and then the story of Maruquita, and then the story of Vega and Maruquita’s concerns over the novel. The matrix degrees obstructs the flow of the story where the author himself interjects several times.

    Prior to reading your blog post, I had not thought of “Omaha Bigelow” as a series of narratives embedded within a frame narrative. It is a great point, because it is a different way of understanding the different stories that are developing along parallel lines; thought they at first seem tangential to each other, they are all important to the larger narrative. It reminds me of a part in the book where Winnifred is celebrating Thanksgiving with her family, and the narrator interjects that Winnifred’s plotting will eventually lead to the tragedy of September 11 and effect the narrative as a whole.

    The point you brought up here was completely valid. I actually find it completely fascinating, the concept of having so many alternative stories occurring simultaneously. In a sense they all tie in, even as the narrative voices and styles change because it is the same author crafting these characters, their words and emotions. Daniel also made a very interesting blog post relating to how small changes, creating alternative universes within literature, can affect so much even in a realistic time line when considered.
